Rule 2

Rule 2 – Children
2009.10.20 CE

Rule 2 – Protect the children, for they are fragile of mind and body. Be there for them when they are growing up, don’t be an absentee parent. When you grow up and rebel remember it is your youth you are rebelling against, not the outside world.

Rule 2 is present because children really do need protection and guidance. They are a blank slate that does not know how things work either socially or physically.

They have an inherent understanding of simple laws of physics, such as things disappear when they go behind other things, etc. but they do not know more complex things like what’s with the tilt of the earth, etc.

This is also true of social interactions. They know that crying gets them what they need, such as food, a “change”, attention, warmth, etc. but they haven’t a clue as to how to respond to others outside of mom.

Physically, they start out so incapable that it is amazing they make it to adulthood. And since they are the future, we really need to ensure their physical safety and well being. This includes letting them “play in the dirt” and catch colds to build their immune systems, fall down once in a while so they can learn to walk, etc. without letting it go so far they get permanently disabled.

They are also unsure of what is ‘right’ and what is ‘wrong’ within their society. For this they need a lot of guidance from their parents, and occasionally guidance from others.

Children are very self centered and selfish, almost to a fault. As they grow, they need to be guided to balance this selfish attitude against the good of others, in other words balancing their sense of self with their empathy towards others.

This subject would take books to address properly, so let’s just say that they need help, physically, socially and educationally to grow up and be able to live within your society. It is your responsibility to ensure they get this guidance.

In their final hours of being a child, children grow up. And when they do, they need to rebel in order to break free from the strong bond between children and their parents. Just remind them that they are rebelling against their youth, not you. Then let it go.

And always remember that children are “18 year loaners”, they are not your property and they will become independent and move away to a happy life without you, just as you did. And don’t worry, you will continue to be mom and dad.
